Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the centre of the Nordic country. The Scandinavian city stretches over fourteen islands and which are connected by 53 bridges. With a population of 2.3 million in the metropolitan area, it is the most populous in Scandinavia.
Stockholm is not only the seat of the government and the city is also the seat of the Swedish monarch. The Swedish monarch has its official seat in Stockholm Palace (Swedish: Stockholms slott or Kungliga slottet). This is situated in the historic city centre of Stadsholmen and was built on the same site after the destruction of Tre Kronor Castle between 1697 and 1760. It is kept in baroque style and has 1430 rooms.
