Helsinki – Part 1

Situated on the banks of the Gulf of Finland is Helsinki, the capital of the Scandinavian country of Finland. The Swedish city of Stockholm is located 400 kilometers to the east and St. Petersburg, Russia, 390 kilometers to the west. With a distance of just 80 kilometers, the Estonian capital Tallinn is a popular destination for day trips.

Uspenski Cathedral

Situated on top of a hill at the western end of the Katajanokka peninsula in the centre of Helsinki is Uspenskin katedraali (Uspenski Cathedral). The Eastern Orthodox Cathedral was designed by architect Alexei Gornostayev in the Russian-Byzantine style and consecrated in 1868.

Helsinki Cathedral

Another cathedral in Helsinki’s city centre is the Helsingin tuomiokirkko (Helsinki Cathedral). The neoclassical style building with its white facade and striking green domes was completed in 1852. The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral was designed by the German architect Carl Ludvig Engel.
