The Slovak Republic is a European country. It is located in Central Europe and border bordered by Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. Slovakia has a population of around 5.4 million and is part of the European Union and Schengen.
Traditional dishes of the Slovak cuisine are mainly based on pork, poultry, potatoes, cabbage, and milk products. Because of the close proximity, it is influenced by the Austrian, Hungarian and Czech cuisine. One of the national dishes is Bryndzové halušky. It consists of boiled potato dough, which are similar in appearance to gnocchi, and a soft sheep cheese.
The most common family name in Slovakia is Horváth / Horváthová. Surnames in Slovakia are most of the time gender specific. So if a woman marries in Slovakia and wants to take her husband’s surname, the feminine suffix “ová” is usually added to the masculine form.
