Tokyo is located on the largest Japanese island of Honshu in the east of the region Kantō.
In the middle of 19th century, Tokyo, then called Edo, became the capital of the Asian country. It replaced Kyoto, which until then had been the emperor’s seat.
With over 37 million inhabitants, the Tokyo metropolitan area is the most populous in the world. However, if you count the inhabitants within the city limits, Tokyo, with its 13.5 million, is clearly beaten and with this number it is not even in the top 10 worldwide.
Tokyo has an extensive public transportation network to get all these people to their destination every day. Tokyo has one of the most extensive rail networks in the world. There are over 150 lines on over 4700 kilometres of operational track, operated by almost fifty operators.
There are hundreds of stations in Tokyo, the Tokyo Subway alone has 285 stations.The busiest station is Shinjuku, which is run by several millions every day. With an average of 3.64 million passengers per day, it set a world record in 2011.
