Schwetzingen is a city in the northwest of Baden-Württemberg. The German city belongs to the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and is located near Heidelberg and Mannheim.
Since the 19th century, cultivation of asparagus has gained importance for Schwetzingen and the surrounding area. There is therefore also a monument on this subject on the Schlossplatz in the centre of the city.
Schwetzingen Palace
Far more remarkable, especially as a visitor, is the largely preserved baroque palace complex with park of Schwetzingen.
The Schwetzingen Palace, or in German Schloss Schwetzingen, was the summer residence of the Electors Palatine Charles III Philip and Charles IV Theodore (of the House of Wittelsbach). It consists of a palace and a magnificent garden. The extensive landscape garden was created in the 18th century and is a mix of different styles.
There are several buildings on the grounds of the garden. There are temples, an orangery, an Italian style bathhouse and a mosque.
The mosque is located in the Turkish Garden and was erected at the end of the 18th century, making it the first mosque in a German park. In the course of time it was used for religious purposes, but this was not intended during construction.
