1984, the year of the Winter Olympics, Sarajevo respectively Bosnia-Herzegovina was still part of Yugoslavia.
In March 1992 Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence and was subsequently admitted as a member state of the United Nations. In April 1992, Bosnia War began in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Yugoslav Wars. In which tens of thousands of people lost their lives.
Sarajevo was defeated by Serb forces of the Republika Srpska and the Yugoslav People’s Army from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996. The occupation period of almost four years (1,425 days) holds the sad record as the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare.
During this time 11,541 people lost their lives.
