Matsumoto is a Japanese city in the Nagano Prefecture. It has a population of around 240.000 and designated as a special city. The city is located in the center of the Nagano Prefecture and is around 124 kilometers away from Tokyo.

Special Cities of Japan

Tokureishi / 特例市 (English: special city), are delegated many of the functions normally performed by the prefectures. The local administrative division is created by the national government.

To become a special city in Japan, the population must be at least 200,000.
