From 794, when Kyoto became the capital of Japan, the Kyoto Imperial Palace served as the residence of the Imperial Family.

More than 1000 years later, the Emperor Meiji moved the seat of the Imperial Family to Tokyo.

During this period the palace burned down several times. Each time it was rebuilt, the last reconstruction was completed in 1855.
