The city of Konstanz was the birthplace of Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The later Count pioneered rigid airship development at the beginning of the 20th century and founded Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH.

The company still exists today. Passenger flights with airships depart from nearby Friedrichshafen airport today. These are therefore not a rarity in the sky above Konstanz.
