Cologne was founded in Roman times under the name Oppidum Ubiorum and with its four million inhabitants is still today an important metropolis. It is the headquarters and production facilities of many companies and an important media city.
Cologne is also an important centre for the art trade, trade fairs and last but not least one of the epicenters of Carnival.

The city is divided into 9 districts with 86 districts and extends over both banks. They are connected by seven bridges, the most famous being the Hohenzollern Bridge.
