In the Zhongzheng District there is another impressive building of Taipei, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. It was opened in honor of ◼Chiang Kai-shek in 1980, five years after his death.
The four sides of the building are white and on it sits a blue octagonal shaped, eight is a traditional lucky number in Asia, roof.
Chiang Kai-shek was born in 1887 and was a soldier and politician of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). In 1946, a civil war broke out between the KMT and the communists in China. The Communists won and founded the People’s Republic of China. Chiang fled into exile to the island of Taiwan and remained president of the Republic of China until his death in 1975.
The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is located at the eastern end of 240,000 square meters large Liberty Square. To the north of the square is the National Concert Hall, directly opposite the twin building where the National Theatre is located.
