Calais is a coastal town in the north of France. The city is located on the Strait of Dover road and near the entrance to the Channel Tunnel.

By ferry from Dover in Great Britain typically around 1 hour 30 mins to Calais.
The Eurostar takes about one hour from London St Pancras to Calais Frethun, a distance of about 160 kilometres. This is made possible by the 50 km long Channel Tunnel, which opened in 1994.
After the stop in Calais, the Eurostar stops 27 minutes later in Lille and after a little more than another hour in Paris.

This proximity to Great Britain makes Calais a popular day-trip destination for British tourists.
