The northeastern city was first mentioned in the 13th century. Since then it has served as the capital for various states. After the Second World War, Berlin was divided by the Allies.

The East German part became the capital of East Germany. The West German exclave became a de facto West German exclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall and Bonn became the capital of West Germany. After the reunification of Germany, Berlin became the capital for both reunited parts of Germany.

The Berlin Victory Column was erected in 1864 as a monument to Prussia’s victory in the German-Danish War. It was designed by Heinrich Strack.

On the column is the bronze sculpture of Victoria. This is called by the Berliners lovingly “Goldelse”. The Victory Column has a height of 63 meters.

Today the victory column, which also has a viewing platform, is located at the Great Star, in front of it at Königsplatz (now Platz der Republik) at the end of the Siegesallee (Victory Avenue).
