The northeastern city was first mentioned in the 13th century. Since then it has served as the capital for various states. After the Second World War, Berlin was divided by the Allies.

The East German part became the capital of East Germany. The West German exclave became a de facto West German exclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall and Bonn became the capital of West Germany. After the reunification of Germany, Berlin became the capital for both reunited parts of Germany.
