The capital of the Republic of Serbia lies at the mouth of the Sava into the Danube. Belgrade consists of 10 municipalities and 7 suburban municipalities and has about 1.2 million inhabitants. The Serbian name of the city is Beograd, which translates to white city.
Kalemegdan Park is located on a cliff at the junction of the River Sava and the Danube at an altitude of 125 meters. It is the largest park in the city and one of the most important historical sites. The name of the Kalemegdan is formed from the words of Turkish origin for fortress (“kale”) and battlefield (“megdan”).
The Belgrade Fortress was first built in 279 BC and formed the heart of the city at that time. Due to its strategic location, the fortress was highly deserved and changed multiple times hands over the centuries. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
