Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and the city with the largest population. The metropolis is located in the province “Noord-Holland”, whose capital is however the nearby Haarlem. Amsterdam is also not the seat of the government and the royal family, both of which are located in The Hague.
The city centre of Amsterdam is intersected with more than a hundred kilometers of canals, the so-called Grachten. Some of the canals have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2010.
