Every photographer who is a bit interested in portrait photography will certainly know the situation, you see an interesting person and would like to capture that person on a photo. But what is the best way to ask permission to take a picture?
Of course, there is no ultimate tip that always works. The most important thing is to overcome your unfounded fear. If you ask nicely if you are allowed to take a picture, the worst thing that can happen is the answer No. Nothing worse. You should definitely internalize that. – You can only win!
Start into the conversation
But what is the best way to get into a conversation? Sometimes a simple “hello” or an eye contact and pointing to the camera can be enough.
Compliments
One way is to give the person a compliment. What was the first thing you noticed about the person and why would you like to take a picture of the person? An interesting tattoo? An eye-catching piece of clothing? Of course you should avoid all too clumsy sayings or things that the person has heard hundreds of times? According to the motto: “Hello, you’re pretty! Can I take a picture of you?”
Common situation
An entry into a conversation and asking for the photo can also be a common situation. Waiting for the bus; the weather…
Reason for the photo
“Hey, can I take a picture of you like this?” – Can seem a bit strange to one or the other. So think of an assignment of some sort beforehand. That can be a photo project, a task for the university or just that you want to try out a new piece of technology. “Hello, I’m working on a photo project and taking pictures of the people in my hometown? Would you mind if I photographed you for it?” – Sounds more trustworthy.
It can also be an advantage to have some of your pictures with you in printed form and show them to the person.
Thank you!
If you have received the permission and took your picture , you should say thank you in any case and possibly offer to send the photo by mail or messenger. If you have business cards, you can of course hand them over.
Be friendly, accept a no & don’t be discouraged
The most important tip, which one should consider in any case, at the end: Always be friendly, accept a “no” and don’t be discouraged.
